Causes
Nipple inversion can be down to genetics and may be present from birth, or some nipples which appear to be inverted but protrude with stimulation are often referred to as ‘shy’. Bodily changes can sometimes be the cause of nipple inversion, for instance after pregnancy when the skin around the nipple may become more loose as a result of breastfeeding. Typically inverted nipples occur as a result of the milk ducts being too short or too tight.
Inverted nipples which develop suddenly or later in life, when a cause is not generally obvious (for example breastfeeding or surgery), should always be checked by a medical doctor. This is to ensure there is no underlying health concern.
Procedure
Inverted nipple correction seeks to release the nipple from the milk ducts via stretching or in some cases, cutting. Various techniques can be used to improve and correct nipple inversion. All available treatment options will be discussed with the patient during an initial consultation.
