About Breast Implant Removal
Breast implants can increase the volume of the breasts for a curvier appearance, but over time, changes to your body from ageing, pregnancy, and weight loss can affect your appearance. Some women find that they feel more comfortable without implants for aesthetic and/or functional reasons. Some common factors that lead women to remove their breast implants include:
- Capsular contracture: When scar tissue shrinks around an implant, this can cause discomfort and aesthetic changes. Dr Fazel can address constricted scar tissue and remove the implant while maintaining pleasing and natural-looking results.
- Breast implant illness: If you are struggling with brain fog, fatigue, or nausea after receiving implants, removing implants can help you find relief and improve your quality of life.
- Implant displacement: Breast implants can shift inside the breast pockets, resulting in asymmetry. To address this, Dr Fazel can reshape the breast mound and/or remove the implant and place a new one.
- Ruptured implants: If your implant ruptures or tears, we can remove it and place a new one to help you maintain the results of your breast augmentation.
Breast Implant Exchange
Breast implant exchange replaces the old breast implants with new ones to enhance your figure for a smoother appearance. We offer several different types of implants to help you enhance the appearance of your breasts:
- Saline: A saltwater-filled implant can help you increase the size of your breast to your desired volume through smaller incisions
- Silicone: With a flexible gel-filled implant, we can increase the volume of your breasts while more accurately mimicking a natural look and feel.
- Gummy Bear: Gummy bear implants are slightly firmer, flexible silicone gel-filled implants that can improve breast projection.
Benefits
Sometimes, a woman’s lifestyle or body shape changes, and their augmented breasts no longer suit them. Other women may have experienced issues with their breast implants, such as implant rupture or capsular contracture, or want their implants to be removed rather than replaced.
Some women may suffer from Breast Implant Illness (BII), a condition where patients experience a wide range of autoimmune symptoms that may resolve once the implants are removed. Dr Fazel has helped many patients remove their implants and place new ones if they desire. Like all procedures, breast implant removal is performed with a patient’s unique aesthetic goals in consideration.
Candidates
Suitable candidates for breast implant removal are those who would like to remove and/or replace their current breast implants with new ones. If you would like to replace your current implants, we will carefully select new implants based on your underlying anatomy and specific aesthetic goals. Dr Fazel is highly experienced in breast implant removal (explant) surgery by routinely removing the implant with the entire surrounding capsule (known as an en bloc capsulectomy). Ordinarily, he performs this procedure in 60 to 90 minutes. If you are in good general health and have realistic expectations, you are likely a good candidate for this procedure.
Personal Consultation
During your consultation, we will ask about your medical history and aesthetic goals to create a personalised treatment plan for your specific needs. If desired, Dr Fazel can also combine breast implant removal with procedures such as an auto augmentation breast lift, which reshapes and tightens the remaining skin and breast tissue, or fat transfer, which can help restore some of the lost volume (also called a hybrid or composite breast augmentation).

Preparation
To prepare for breast implant removal, you will need to stop taking medications and supplements that thin your blood. On the day of your procedure, you will need to wear comfortable clothing. We recommend wearing a shirt that buttons down the front that you can easily remove. You will also need to make arrangements for a trusted adult to drive you home and care for you.
Procedure
The treatment process for breast implant removal will depend on whether or not you need additional treatments to achieve your aesthetic goals and the type of implant you receive. Breast implant placements typically take 1 hour, and depending on the complexity of the procedure, you can return home after your monitoring period.
Patients typically receive general anaesthesia during breast implant removal or revision. There are several different types of incisions Dr Fazel can make depending on your aesthetic goals. He will make thin incisions along the natural curves of your skin to remove the implants for natural-looking results. Most frequently, he will make incisions in the same places they were made when your implants were placed. Once an incision is made, he will carefully remove the implant and any scar tissue present. If a patient is receiving a replacement implant, it will be placed at this time.
En Bloc Capsulectomy
Dr Fazel usually removes the entire capsule (scar tissue) surrounding an implant when performing implant removal or implant exchange. We will photograph the capsule and, if needed, send it to a lab for analysis.
After Your Treatment
A breast implant removal procedure will offer you natural-looking results and relief from any burdens your breast implants have caused you. Enhancing the appearance of your breasts can balance your proportions and accentuate your curves. Afterwards, you will need to avoid strenuous activities, including lifting anything heavier than 4 kilos, for several weeks. You should be able to return to work after 4-5 days, depending on your treatment plan. You will also need to wear a compression garment for approximately 6 weeks. Most patients can begin exercising their lower body after 2 weeks and their upper body after approximately 6 weeks.
Results

Breast implant removal can help you enjoy a balanced figure and natural-looking results. Strategically enhancing your figure can help you increase your confidence as your appearance matches your ideal body image. Patients struggling with symptoms of breast implant illness also find that their symptoms resolve after removing the implants.
Additional Breast Enhancement Treatments
We offer several additional breast enhancement procedures to help you achieve your desired look.
Areola Reduction
Areola reduction is a treatment that reduces the size of the areolas for a more attractive or proportional appearance. If you have large and/or uneven areolae, the treatment can address asymmetry for a more balanced, symmetrical look.
Nipple Reduction
Nipple reduction is a treatment that improves the appearance of your breasts by reducing the size of the nipple. We can excise the excess tissue and reshape the nipples to address changes to your appearance after ageing or pregnancy.

FAQ
How do breasts look once the implants are removed?
This depends on how big the implants were, how long they had been in, and whether there have been any physical changes in the intervening period.
What can be done to avoid loose skin after breast implant removal?
We can combine breast implant removal with skin tightening or a breast lift to reshape and tighten the remaining skin and breast tissue. Dr Fazel will discuss these options during a consultation. In addition to this, we can restore volume using fat transfer to the breast, which involves taking fat from elsewhere in the body through liposuction and placing it around the breast.
What scars are involved in breast implant removal?
We will typically remove the implant through the previous scar. If a simultaneous breast skin tightening or a breast lift procedure is performed, this will entail additional scars (either a doughnut scar around the nipple or a lollipop scar that goes around the nipple and down to the breast crease).
Does breast implant removal require drains?
It is very unusual for us to use drains during breast implant removal surgery. Dr Fazel uses a technique to place internal stitches, which reduces fluid buildup and thus avoids the use of drains.
