About Gynaecomastia

Male Breast Surgery London

Gynaecomastia, commonly referred to as “moobs” or “male boobs”, is a condition characterised by enlarged male breasts due to excess tissue. It affects males of all ages, though it is mostly seen in infancy, puberty, and late adulthood. (1) The condition causes a visible lump behind the nipple, causing the breast to become more prominent. Symptoms can become more pronounced, taking on the fuller shape of female breasts.

At birth, gynaecomastia is caused by high oestrogen levels in the mother. However, the condition usually subsides within a few weeks. During puberty, gynaecomastia is caused by hormone fluctuation. Puberty is a tumultuous time hormonally, marked with irregularities in relative levels of testosterone and oestrogen. If testosterone levels dip, or if oestrogen levels spike, gynaecomastia can develop in pubescent males’ breasts. These symptoms can take up to two years to subside.

During adulthood, gynaecomastia primarily affects men over the age of 50. As men get older, testosterone levels decrease. Having low testosterone relative to oestrogen can cause breast tissue to grow. Adult males who have more body fat are more likely to develop gynaecomastia. Excess fat can trigger the production of oestrogen, leading to enlarged breasts.

Additionally, certain health conditions may contribute to gynaecomastia. These include:

  • Thyroid Disease
  • Klinefelter Syndrome
  • Liver Disease
  • Kidney Failure
  • Adrenal Tumours
  • Excessive Alcohol Intake

Certain medications can also cause gynaecomastia. These include:

  • Antidepressants
  • Antianxiety Medication
  • Methadone

As well as treatments for:

  • Bacterial and Fungal Infections
  • Heartburn
  • Enlarged Prostate
  • High Blood Pressure

If the symptoms of gynaecomastia are too much to deal with, or they are not going away, Dr. Fazel offers male breast surgery. This procedure can remove your excess breast tissue and reshape your chest. If you want to regain confidence in your body, gynaecomastia surgery is a great solution.

Benefits of Gynaecomastia Surgery

Getting rid of enlarged breasts with gynaecomastia surgery can significantly change the way you feel about your body. If you feel that your chest is not how it should be, this can have a detrimental effect on your self-esteem.

Treating gynaecomastia with surgery masculinises the chest, approximating a traditional male physique. This can increase your self-esteem and your aesthetic appearance. It will also be easier to wear tighter clothing, which will fall more naturally over your chest.

What is VASER Liposuction?

VASER stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance. VASER liposuction is a minimally invasive technique that utilises ultrasound technology to precisely target and remove excess fat cells in the chest area. By using VASER liposuction, Dr. Fazel specifically addresses gynaecomastia, resulting in a more sculpted and masculine chest contour. This advanced approach allows for the removal of unwanted fat while preserving other tissues, such as blood vessels and nerves, leading to faster recovery times and reduced postoperative discomfort

Who is a Candidate for Gynaecomastia Surgery?

Gynaecomastia surgery is an effective choice for men who have tried other breast tissue-reducing strategies such as weight loss. The ideal candidate for gynaecomastia surgery will be negatively affected by enlarged breast tissue and ready to do something about it. If you fit this description, gynaecomastia surgery might be right for you.

We recommend against gynaecomastia surgery if your breast size is still fluctuating, as the results of your procedure could be diminished after the fact by continual growth.

If you are experiencing gynaecomastia in puberty, this treatment is not recommended. Undergoing gynaecomastia surgery before the completion of puberty could prove ineffective, as the continuation of puberty may lead to a regrowth of excess breast tissue. (2)

Based on the results of your evaluation, you may need to start or stop taking certain medications. If you smoke, we recommend stopping in the weeks before your surgery. Liposuction

VASER Liposuction uses ultrasonic energy and suction to remove fat from specific areas of the body. For gynaecomastia treatment, this involves first making small incisions in the breast area. Dr. Fazel inserts a slim metal tube called a cannula into the incisions and removes excess fat. With this, he can control how much and from which parts of breast the fat is removed in order to achieve the desired results. The ultrasound energy emitted by the VASER probe emulsifies the targeted fat cells, making them easier to remove. Once the desired contour is achieved, any excess skin may also be addressed to ensure optimal results.

Excision

Gynecomastia surgery can also utilise excision, which involves making larger incisions to remove the excess skin and tissue of the breast. During excision, Dr. Fazel can reposition the nipple and areola. This is done in order to preserve the natural appearance of the breast after it has been reduced and reshaped.

Liposuction and excision are often combined in gynecomastia treatment. Removing fat in combination with the removal of excess skin and other tissue can optimise the results of the treatment.

Whether your surgeon uses liposuction, excision or both will depend on the goals you have for your breasts.

Recovery

Gynaecomastia surgery is an outpatient procedure. For your safety, you should arrange a ride home from our facility beforehand. We will give you instructions on how to ensure a successful recovery. This will involve how to treat your healing incisions, as well as which medications to take in order to reduce discomfort and swelling.

Dr. Fazel may place small tubes in your chest area during surgery. These tubes help to drain excess fluid from your breast tissue during recovery. They will be removed when they are no longer necessary.

You should avoid strenuous activity during the recovery period. Expect some swelling while the area heals. Dr. Fazel will provide you with personalised details regarding your expected recovery time.

Results

The results of your gynaecomastia surgery will be apparent when the swelling has gone down. Once your recovery process has ended, you will be able to appreciate your new, more masculine chest aesthetic

Try to maintain a steady weight after your treatment. Gaining weight could cause your breast tissue to enlarge again. If for some reason your breast tissue does become more apparent again after your surgery, it is possible to receive additional gynaecomastia surgeries.

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

At Refresh by Fazel, we offer treatments that can work in combination with gynaecomastia surgery.

Areola Reduction

Areola correction can be included in gynaecomastia surgery. Areola reduction is a simple cosmetic procedure that addresses oversized areolas. If you feel that your areolas are too large or perhaps misshapen, this treatment is a great solution. The procedure involves removing the skin around the areola with a circular incision, and tightening the tissue around the nipple.

VASER Liposuction

VASER liposuction can remove stubborn pockets of fat from a wide variety of areas. If you want to complement the effects of your gynaecomastia surgery by reducing the size of other body parts, this treatment could do the trick. For example, smoothing your abdomen with VASER liposuction will work with your reduced breast size to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing physique.

Gland Excision

Gynaecomastia surgery can also utilise excision. This involves making larger incisions to remove the excess skin and tissue of the breast. During excision, Dr. Fazel repositions the nipple and areola. This is done in order to preserve the natural appearance of the chest after reshaping.

Liposuction and excision are often combined in gynaecomastia treatment. Removing fat in combination with the removal of excess skin and other tissue can optimise the results of the treatment. Although it is not often used, where necessary, skin tightening may be employed to ensure a smooth contour.

Whether Dr. Fazel uses liposuction, excision or both will depend on your individualised treatment plan.

FAQ

What causes gynaecomastia?

Gynaecomastia can be caused by a number of factors. Hormone imbalance, such as diminished testosterone, can lead to excess breast tissue. Certain conditions like thyroid disease can lead to gynaecomastia. It can be caused by certain medications, such as antidepressants. Excessive use of alcohol has also been shown to cause gynaecomastia.

How can you treat gynaecomastia?

Gynaecomastia can go away naturally or through diet and exercise. If symptoms persist and you have had enough, you can opt to receive surgery. The surgery typically involves liposuction, excision, or a combination of both. Liposuction involves removal of excess fat from the breast. Excision involves removal of excess skin and tissue from the breast, as well as nipple and areola reconstruction.

Does gynaecomastia surgery cause scarring?

Gynaecomastia surgery involves incisions, so scarring is an appropriate concern. The surgeon makes the incisions around the natural contour of the breast to reduce visibility of scarring. A common incision is also on the areola, which hides scarring well. Overall, scars from gynaecomastia surgery fade over time and are aesthetically negligible.
