Benefits

Sometimes, a woman’s lifestyle or body shape changes and their augmented breasts no longer suit them. Others women may have experienced uncommon issues with their breast implants, such as implant rupture or capsular contracture, or have concerns about BIA-ALCL and wish their implants to be removed rather than replaced.

Rarely some women suffer from ‘Breast Implant Illness’, whereby patients experience a wide range of autoimmune-like symptoms that may resolve once the implants are removed. Although to date no link has been identified between breast implants and ‘Breast Implant Illness’, Maisam Fazel recognises the distress this can cause and is highly experienced in removing implants in such cases.

Expectations

Breast Implant Removal

Maisam Fazel is highly experienced in breast implant removal (explant) surgery by routinely removing the implant with the entire surrounding capsule (known as an en bloc capsulectomy). Ordinarily, he performs this procedure in 60 to 90 minutes as daycase surgery.

En bloc capsulectomy: Maisam Fazel usually removes the entire capsule (scar tissue) surrounding an implant when performing implant removal or implant exchange. The capsule is photographed and if needed, sent for analysis to a lab.

If desired, Maisam Fazel can also combine breast implant removal (explant) with procedures such as an autoaugmentation breast lift (to reshape and tighten the remaining skin and breast tissue) or fat transfer which can help restore some of the lost volume (also called a hybrid or composite breast augmentation).

FAQ

How do breasts look once the implants are removed?

This depends on how big the implants were, how long they had been in for and whether there has been any pregnancy related changes in the intervening period.

What can be done to avoid loose skin after breast implant removal?

Maisam Fazel can combine breast implant removal with skin tightening or a breast lift to reshape and tighten the remaining skin and breast tissue. This can be done either through a donut scar around the nipple or a lollipop scar that goes round the nipple and down to the breast crease. He will discuss these options during a consultation. In addition to this, Maisam Fazel can help restore some volume using fat transfer to the breast, which involves taking fat from elsewhere in the body through liposuction and placing it around the breast (also call a hybrid or composite breast augmentation)

What scars are involved in breast implant removal?

Maisam Fazel will typically remove the implant through the previous scar. If simultaneous breast skin tightening or a breast lift procedure is performed, this will entail additional scars (either a donut scar around the nipple or a lollipop scar that goes round the nipple and down to the breast crease).

Does Maisam Fazel use drains when removing breast implants?

It is very unusual for Maisam Fazel to use drains during breast implant removal surgery. He uses a technique to place internal stitches which reduces fluid build up and thus avoids the use of drains.
