Blepharoplasty: the minor procedure with major results

If there’s one aspect of the face that could do with a boost as we mature, it’s the areas around our eyes. For one, it’s when you look at someone’s face for the first time, the eyes are the first place you look. Secondly, the eye area takes a lot of punishment over the course of our life due to our various facial expressions repeated over time and general wear and tear. But which procedure would be right for you?

There are two main eyelift procedures – known as upper blepharoplasty and lower blepharoplasty – and they do two separate jobs. The aim for both of them is the same, however – making your entire face appear younger.

Upper blepharoplasty benefits

This procedure is designed to correct the drooping effect of an eyelid, by removing any eyelid overhang in order to restore the prominence of the eyes, while also softening frown lines and getting rid of orbicularis oculi contractions – otherwise known as ‘crows feet’.

Upper eyelid work will involve a hidden incision inside the natural crease of the eye, which extends slightly beyond the outside corner, allowing the surgeon to remove excess skin and fatty tissue.

Lower blepharoplasty benefits

This procedure, on the other hand, is geared towards the removal of bags and puffiness beneath the eyes, smoothing out the area and restoring vitality – as well as eliminating the deep hollows under the eyes known as ‘tear troughs’.

Lower blepharoplasty incisions are made below the lower lashes, allowing the practitioner to remove excess skin, muscle and fat. In certain cases, the fat can be repositioned to order to smooth out the appearance and restore vitality.

Both procedures are performed under local anaesthesia – with or without sedation – and they really take the years off your face. So if you want to do something about the way you look with minimal risk and maximum effectiveness, blepharoplasty is the perfect entry-level procedure.
