Am I a good candidate for a breast reduction?

Sunday, March 20th, 2016, 11:39 am

When people hear the term cosmetic breast surgery, they tend to think of breast augmentations – indeed, they are consistently the clear leader in the UK’s annual cosmetic surgery figures. However, for a significant number of women, the aim is not to enhance but to reduce the volume of their breasts. In 2015, 5450 women chose to have a breast reduction – a 13% rise on figures from the previous year. Overly large breasts can create an array of physical problems including back and neck pain, poor posture, difficulty in engaging in vigorous activity, skin rashes under the breasts; they can even cause breathing problems. There are other problems too: difficulty in finding clothes that fit, attracting unwanted stares and being acutely self-conscious about your shape.

How do I know if I am suitable for breast reduction surgery?

During a breast reduction consultation at Mr Maisam Fazel’s Berskhire clinic, you will discuss the reasons you desire surgery and will undergo a physical examination. Mr Fazel, an experienced breast surgeon, will want to know that you are in good physical health and therefore fit for surgery, and that you have realistic expectations of the aesthetic outcomes. As a general guide, women not yet 18 or those who may wish to breastfeed in the future are advised to put their breast reduction plans on hold for the time being.

So how will my breasts be made smaller?

A breast reduction – or reduction mammaplasty – involves removing fat and glandular tissue and then tightening excess skin to create a neater, smaller breast. By talking his candidates for breast reduction surgery through every detail of the procedure and ensuring they understand both the potential risks and limitations, Mr Fazel enables his Berkshire patients to make informed and confident decisions – and to take a step closer to enjoying better quality of life and greater body confidence.
