What oncoplastic surgery can do for you

While many women who have undergone mastectomies are content – and even understandably proud – to either leave the results of their breast cancer surgery as is or supplement their body shape with mastectomy bras, other women want as permanent a solution as possible to their shape issues. Oncoplastic surgery is that solution.

While the physical benefits of oncoplastic surgery are obvious, some women feel that the psychological benefits are even more important. As studies have concluded, women who have undergone oncoplastic surgery report that more confident, less depressed and have a more positive view of themselves after undergoing the procedure.

What is oncoplastic surgery?

It’s a very bespoke procedure aimed at restoring the shape of breasts that have undergone a mastectomy. As you can imagine, there is no one-size-fits-all technique: some people will have undergone a partial mastectomy in one breast, while someone else may have undergone a total mastectomy in both breasts.

The treatment we can provide can be grouped into four separate techniques:

  • Remodelling

This is a technique best suited for small tumours, and involves reshaping the remaining breast tissue after a lumpectomy, in order to disguise any imperfections.

  • Therapeutic Mammaplasty

This is a technique similar to a breast reduction, which removes larger tumours, which may prevent the need for a mastectomy.

  • Local Perforator Flap Volume Replacement

This sophisticated procedure involves the transplanting of tissue from the lateral chest wall to replace the volume lost through a lumpectomy.

  • Lipomodelling

This procedure takes fat from one part of the body, processes it, and injects it into the breast area. It’s a common technique for women who want implant surgery without silicone, but it’s also a very good solution for post-lumpectomy patients.

Refresh Cosmetic Surgery is staffed by licensed oncoplastic surgeons, meaning we are able to provide the full range of oncoplastic techniques. For more information on what we can do, please consult our oncoplastic surgery gallery.
